Benefits in using treated wood

A) Benefits in using treated wood

COMAPO is trying to find a way to make the process better and improving the life span of the crossties therefore we are committed to find new technologies to help us with these tasks. One of the main purposes in COMAPO is to protect the environment by avoiding the excessive chopping of trees. COMAPO works closely with researchers who work on new ways of impregnation and seasoning. Thanks to the preservation treatment of the wood we can stretch the life span of the ties by 10 times, this has a positive impact on the forest conservation.

B) Benefits on creosote treated crossties

Wood has properties which makes it the best material for crossties, such as its high resilence level and elasticity depending on the type of wood. Wood is a fibrous material with high resistance which allows it to support heavy constant loads, and it also is fatigue resistant which allows the crosstie to support 50% of its load capacity millions of times without loosing its strength. The creosote treatment allows the tie to acquire resistance against the weather and insects, it also avoids the crosstie movement because of humidity accumulation.
The estimated life span of the crossties with the right treatment is between 15 and 25 years, depending on its use, maintenance, weather and rail curvature.

.

The main purposes of the ties are:

• Support loads distributed along the rails.

• Transmit and distribute the load through the crosstie and through the ballast.

• Hold the rails at the right angle.
